Michael Saylor, whose company holds 847,000 Bitcoin, more than anyone on earth except its anonymous creator, addresses the question that dominated his recent headlines: why he sold Bitcoin after years of telling people to hold. He starts by putting the sale in context. Nobody has bought and held more Bitcoin than his company, and only Satoshi has ever held more. He explains that a narrative had taken hold in the market: that his company had become so central to Bitcoin that it could never sell, and that if it ever did, both Bitcoin and the company would collapse. Short sellers used that belief to argue the 55 billion dollars of Bitcoin on the balance sheet was effectively worth nothing, which meant the dividends couldn't be paid, which meant the credit was worthless, which meant the equity would go to zero. Saylor calls this a doom loop, and describes the only way to break it: if you want people to believe you can do a thing, you have to do the thing. So they sold enough Bitcoin to fund the dividends and prove the assets were real and liquid. Bitcoin traded up on the news, and the narrative broke. He explains the underlying maths: their break-even point is around 32%, meaning if Bitcoin appreciates faster than that, they could fund dividends indefinitely from the Bitcoin itself rather than by selling equity.
